Script
What comes to mind when you picture a needle and thread? The act of stitching, sewing, creating? We may take it for granted that this historically domestic activity is now accepted in the world of fine art. It wasn’t always this way. A contemporary artist whose work successfully put sewing on the map is Ghada Amer.
Amer was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1963. She spent her time as a young girl by her mother’s side. Her mother would sew suits for herself using fabric, a needle and thread. Local women would visit Amer’s mother to sew together and eventually a vibrant community was formed.
Ghada’s art practice began when she enrolled for her BFA and MFA at the National School of Art in France in 1982. As a student, she was informed by her academic advisors that the university’s painting classes were reserved strictly for men. In this moment, Amer became committed to finding her voice as a female artist.
Determined to break into the male-dominated world of painting, she sourced the skills learned from her mother. By sewing directly into the canvas, a new form of “painting” was invented. Her most celebrated works feature “drips” that, from a distance, appear paint-like. Amer’s ingenuity opened the door for future generations of female artists to proudly express their womanhood though art and the mediums used to create it.
Reflection
This assignment was a reminder that story telling and video editing go hand in hand. I enjoyed stitching images together, whether to the beat of the music or in reference to the script. It's a unique format that helps you 'weave' a narrative across time. As you work on the podcast/video/whatever kind of media you are editing, each small decision you make directly effects how the story will be received. I enjoyed making fluid transitions and giving rhythm to this project. I feel my interest for editing has been sparked again!
